Name: Whitney Kieley

Hometown: Wayzata, Minnesota

How do you stay busy from September-May?
I am a student working on an Elementary Education degree with just two years left. I also teach swimming lessons at the Ridgedale YMCA, which is super fun!

How long have you been involved with Warren?
I never had the privilege of attending camp as a camper, but after my sister, Allison, discovered Warren years ago and couldn’t stop talking about it, I couldn’t resist applying myself! It’s probably the best decision I’ve ever made.

What activities are you involved in?
I’m in my element on the waterfront, especially in Swimming activity, but I also enjoy ropes, athletics, arts & crafts, and boating.

What age group do you work with?
WE ARE THE CUBBIES! WE THE DIRTY ROTTEN CUBBIES! I love getting to work with all of the age groups in activities because it’s fun to watch everyone bond, but I especially like cubbies because for some of them, it’s the first time they are experiencing camp and I like to show them the ropes.

What is one piece of advice you would give a first year camper?
Don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone because everyone is weird at camp and we’re all there to just have fun!

Why do you enjoy working at Warren?
It is SO fun. I love being around kids, as a counselor you’re literally surrounded by them 24/7. It’s the job for me! Camp Warren teaches campers valuable life skills they won’t learn anywhere else all within the comfort of a great place surrounded by loving staff.

Favorite camp song?
Rolling over the Billows but ONLY if every single person in the dining hall is singing as loud as they can.

Favorite all camp game?
Five Star General

Favorite Camp Counselor moment?
I was the waterfront director last summer, so I got very familiar with the swimming activity and all the campers who chose to be in it. We have ranks that campers can achieve during their time at camp, with Kraken being the most advanced. An example of a skill they have to accomplish to earn the rank is beating a counselor in a swimming race. (Obviously no one picked me to race…smart kids ;) ) There were two girls last summer (shout out to Renny and Holden) who checked off every rank, including the Krakken. At the end of the session, we hand out awards and ranks for the swimming activity and it was so much fun to give out that rank to those campers. It was really fun to help them throughout the session and watch them achieve a really challenging goal.

Anything else we should know about?
Sundays are the best day of the week and enjoy every minute you have at camp. Trust me…you’ll miss it during the off season.
