Specialty Camps

At each of our specialty camps, day campers spend approximately two hours each day in their specialized activity. The remainder of the day is spent enjoying traditional camp activities.

Sports Spectacular Camp

Entering grades 1 – 6 in fall, 2017

Game on! This camp is designed to teach general skills in the following sports: soccer, basketball, volleyball, climbing, swimming and other field games. Sports Camp is a safe, fun, non-competitive program designed to build teamwork, leadership skills and self-esteem. Campers will also enjoy the outdoors while participating in traditional camp activities.

Dragons, Fairies & Princesses Camp

Entering grades 1 – 2 in fall, 2017

Campers let their imaginations soar in this magical fairy tale-themed arts and crafts camp! Campers make dragon and fairy wings, prince and princess crowns, wands, jewels, fairy tale puppets, costumes and more. Kids will also enjoy a special tea party!

Arts and Crafts Camp

Entering grades 1 – 6 in fall, 2017

Campers discover their artistic side and let their imagination soar. Kids create through a variety of projects such as: clay sculpture, sketching, story telling with cartoons or puppets, watercolors or paints, photography, nature collages, weaving a potholder or placemat, scrap booking, Paper Mache, picture frames, candle holders, necklaces and bracelets, leather craft, candle making, mural painting, character painting and much more. Campers create masterpieces to take home and enjoy!

Archery Camp

Entering grades 3 – 6 in fall, 2017

While learning the fundamentals of archery, campers examine equipment close up, identify the parts of the bow and arrow, and learn the science behind drawing the bow and releasing the arrow. Instructors teach proper grip, stance and aim alignment to use while approaching the target. Campers will discover their ‘eye dominance,’ the first step in becoming a skilled archer. Archery Camp uses more advanced equipment such as Genesis Bows. Equipment is provided.

Fishing Camp

Entering grades 3 – 6 in fall, 2017

Get hooked on fishing and learn basic fishing skills. Beautiful Lake Independence provides the scene for shoreline fishing fun using the catch-and-release method. Fishing poles, tackle and bait are provided at camp. With some luck, campers will bring home pictures of their “trophies!”

YMCA & The National Park Service

The YMCA and the National Park Service have collaborated on the Let’s Move! Outside initiative which provide opportunities for youth to play, learn, and serve on public lands, empowering campers to discover the outdoors. Learn more.

Junior Ranger Camp

Entering grades 3 – 6 in fall, 2017

The YMCA and the National Park Service have partnered together in the Let’s MOVE! Outside Initiative, which empowers youth to discover and create new outdoor opportunities for play, learning, and service. Earn your Junior Ranger Badge and experience firsthand the Junior Ranger motto of Explore, Learn, and Protect. Campers will canoe on the Mississippi River, volunteer in a National Park, and work with a Park Ranger!
