Over eighteen months ago a group of us agreed to do the almost impossible...to write a book about Camp du Nord, a book that would share the camp's historical milestones along with images, stories and quotes that narrate the heart and soul of du Nord.
We sorted through dusty boxes of early documents, old slides, along with fading black and white images which tell of the ambitious early volunteer persistence and belief in the importance of families sharing time in the north woods. We scanned literally thousands of more recently collected camper photos from the last few decades, to pair with personal stories and quotes that explain why so many campers describe du Nord as "life-changing and magical, a place where truly remarkable things happen!"
Our exciting yet very daunting task was to then put it all together. We did it, but it took marathon meetings to decide how to trim the thousands of photo possibilities down to around 750 or so, to painstakingly edit the copy, and to tweak and re-tweak the layout, all with the help of Dave Kenney, a seasoned author, and Cathy Spengler, a very skilled graphic designer. Peg Guilfoyle, who has skied the du Nord trails for many years, guided us through this process with wit, knowledge and patience. After each lively meeting she always added, "This book gets better after every meeting." We needed to hear that, and it did.
We feel sure that CAMP DU NORD: All Nature Sings will speak to many of your Camp du Nord memories and likely even fill in some nuggets you did not realize about this place we all love. Needless to say, we as a committee are thrilled that hard and soft cover copies are at the printer at this writing and will be available very soon, hopefully early November. Stay tuned for book launch events, or if you are like me, get a jump start on your Christmas list and pre-order now!
