Youth attending Summer Power Specialty will spend half of their day at the horse stables and the rest of the day enjoying Summer Power activities at the Rochester Area Family YMCA.

Horse Programs

THE STABLES - HUNT SEAT

Entering grades 3 - 6 in fall

Member Participants: $300/session
Non-Member Program Participants: $310/session

Weeks of June 17 and July 8

Youth will learn about horses, grooming and experience the Hunt Seat/Flat Seat style of horsemanship with a  certified instructor at The Stables Equestrian Center.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of horsemanship and horse care, from how to groom and tack a horse to their routine feed, farrier, and veterinary requirements. In the saddle, we focus on the fundamentals, mixing in a variety of fun activities and exercises designed to improve the student’s balance and control. Riders learn how to safely mount and dismount, walk, trot, halt, and turn (and lope/canter based on experience).

RED GATE RIDING - WESTERN

Entering grades 3 – 6 in fall

Member Participants: $300/session
Non-Member Program Participants: $310/session

Weeks of June 24 and July 15

Participants will experience the western style of riding with Katie Lins, owner and facilitator of Horse Camps at Red Gate. Participants will learn how to safely mount, dismount, walk, trot, and lope (if ready) their horses. Participants will ride in both and indoor and outdoor ring and will work through a variety of games and obstacles designed to improve their confidence and basic horsemanship skills.

Farm to Table

Entering grades 3 – 6 in fall

Member Participants: $200/session
Non-Member Program Participants: $225/session

Week of July 29

Farm to table participants will prepare an assortment of delicious dishes using seasonal ingredients from the YMCA garden. This program is lead and facilitated by YMCA registered dietician Jen Brewer and will take place in the commercial kitchen at Zumbro Lutheran Church. Participants will spend the morning learning, preparing and sampling food. They will spend the afternoon swimming and enjoying other summer Power activities.
