Y Run 2017

Minneapolis, MN – The YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities (YGTC), a leading nonprofit dedicated to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, will host its annual Y Run on Saturday, April 15, at Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis.

This event, hosted by the Y in conjunction with premier sponsor Delta Air Lines and sponsors Summit Orthopedics, Tivity Health, Matrix Fitness, HealthEast, 3M and Octane Fitness, will bring 1,000 Y members, community members and their families and friends together to celebrate their commitment to healthy living.

“The YGTC is committed to providing wellness opportunities for all in our community. The Y Run brings people of all ages and abilities together to pursue their health and wellness goals,” said Glen Gunderson, president and chief executive officer for the YGTC. “Participants might be chasing a personal best in the 10k, aiming to complete their first 5k or enjoying a one mile run or walk with their family. The Y Run welcomes everyone to participate and celebrate healthy living.”

The race will feature:

  • One-mile run/walk for youth and families starting at 8:15 a.m.
  • 10K run/walk starting at 8:45 a.m.
  • 5K run/walk starting at 9:00 a.m.

The race will feature a one-mile run/walk for youth and families, a 5K run/walk and a 10K run/walk. The event will also feature family-friendly activities for all to enjoy before and after their walk or run, including kids’ fitness classes; sports clinics; camp games; music; a selfie booth; a spring-themed costume contest; chair massages by HealthSource Chiropractic & Progressive Wellness; healthy food and beverages provided by Coborn’s, Upper Lakes Foods, Great Harvest Bread Company, Canteen and Seven Sundays; and more exciting activities.

Y Running Tips

The Y engages all community members who may wish to participate by offering tips for new and experienced runners.

  • Stay hydrated in the days leading up to the race.
  • Fuel up on carbs before the race, then find some protein after to help speed recovery. On race day, stick to your routine and have a light breakfast.
  • Change up your routine to fit in some cross training. Strength training, core work or swimming help prevent injury and build strength.
  • Consider what will change if you are switching from treadmill running to the path by Lake Calhoun. Running outside means accounting for factors like weather, unexpected terrain, and others runners or walkers in your path.
